“Stop trying so hard and just do it,” Leona said with a shake of her head. “It’s like fighting. You don’t focus on what move to make next, you just block the kick and punch the guy in his stomach.”
“Yeah, once I know how to do it,” I argued, but focused and tried again.
Fox sat on a patch of grass in front of our house, growing pieces of vines and braiding them in a long rope. I attempted to change his attitude, to make him angry, but he just kept smiling and braiding.
I sank to my knees on the grass with a sigh. “I’m pooped. I can’t do anymore.”
Leona patted my shoulder and sat beside me. “Your stamina is improving at least.”
“My stamina of not being able to do anything? Wonderful.” I hung my head.
“Lunch!” Rhys called from inside the house.
Fox turned and smiled at me. “Done for today?”
I nodded.
He picked me up under the armpits until I was standing, and then kissed me. “Good, because I have something fun planned for us.”
“Okay.” I returned his smile despite still feeling a bit defeated. We hadn’t seen any trace of Justina or Brayden, aka Triton Douche, in four months, and while I was glad to have time free of danger, it worried me. I was certain they were planning something and I wanted to get stronger, so I could be an asset in their defeat.
“Make sure you eat protein,” Leona ordered me as she followed us into the house. “And a bit of sugar.”
“Yes, ma’am,” I said and saluted her.
“I’m going out,” she said and headed for the garage behind the house. “I’ll be back tonight.”
“Oh, are you on your way to visit a werewolf with a special hammer?” I teased.
She smiled, undaunted by my teasing. “You know it! I’m still trying to convince him to use that hammer on me.”
Fox burst into laughter.
“Have fun!” I called to her as we walked inside.
“What’s so funny?” Deryn asked Fox.
He shook his head. “I am not repeating that.”
“What’s for lunch?” I asked, kissing Deryn on the cheek before following him down the hallway.
“Not sure. Nico made it,” he said with a shrug.
“Nico cooked?” Fox’s eyes widened and then he ran down the hallway, disappearing from our view.
Nico was a great cook, so I totally understood Fox’s desire to get there and start eating.
Deryn linked our hands and squeezed. “You okay?”
I looked up into his handsome face. His dark eyes were focused, the corners pinched in concern.
“I’m fine. Just tired from using so much magic. Also, frustrated because I still didn’t accomplish anything,” I said and frowned.
He squeezed my hand again. “You’re improving. Leona told me you are.”
“Not fast enough,” I whispered.
We made it to the dining room, and found Rhys, Fox, and Nico sitting at the table. The table had several main dishes and side dishes.
“What’s this?” I asked. “What’s the occasion?”
Nico stood with a wide smile, his eyes sparkling with warmth. “No occasion. I just felt like cooking you a delicious meal.”
I walked to him and gave him a deep kiss. “It looks and smells delicious.”
He pulled out a chair for me and pushed it in when I sat.
We chatted about random things while I stuffed my face.
